Devo 40: A Mystery Revealed

"But as it is written:
'Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.'
But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. "
1 Corinthians 2:9-10

This passage intrigues me so much. We quote it all the time—“It hasn’t entered the hearts of men what God has prepared for those who love Him…” Yet, we do not usually finish the passage verse which says, “BUT, God has revealed them to us through His spirit…” (emphasis added).

It goes on to say that “no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God” (2:11-12).

What intrigues me so much about this passage is that we can know the things that God has prepared for us—the things no eye has seen or ear heard. We will never know all of them, because they are truly unfathomable; yet, we can search them out.

This passage is an invitation into the depth of the riches of the knowledge of the glory of God (II Cor. 4:6). The spirit of God lives in us if we have received Jesus as our Savior. Therefore, we can daily explore those deep things of God.

Also, we are commanded to be transformed by the renewing of our mind (Rom. 12:2), because the natural man cannot receive things of the spirit (I Cor. 2:14). They seem as foolishness to him, yet we have the mind of Christ (I Cor. 2:14, 16).

We can explore the knowledge of God by being in relationship with the Holy Spirit. In this way, we can rightly discern the word of truth and understand the scriptures.

John 14-16 is all about our relationship with Holy Spirit. He is the spirit of truth that comes to guide us into all truth and bring all things to our remembrance that have been taught to us (Jn 14:26; 16:13).

By abiding in the spirit (abiding in the vine), we can continually talk to Him and receive understanding about the things that have been freely given to us (Jn 15:4-5, 9-10; 1 Jn 4:16).

Abiding in the spirit is not just about getting results though; it is about being in a relationship with Him. It is to know Holy Spirit, the mystery of “Christ in us, the hope of Glory” (Col. 1:27). By having a relationship with Him, He will reveals the riches of the knowledge of God to us and transforms us by the renewing of our minds.

Being transformed by the renewing of our minds is not an entirely instantaneous event, however, because we are transformed from glory to glory by meditating on the Lord and becoming more like Him (II Cor. 3:18). It is a continual process as we behold Him and search Him out.

No wonder this I Corinthians passage is intriguing. The Lord gives us just a taste of the mystery and tells us that the Spirit can reveal it to us. He just wants to increase our hunger for more of Him, so that we would seek to know Him better.

This week, meditate on I Cor. 2 and John 15. Ask Holy Spirit to show you what eye has not seen nor ear heard. Pray or sing in the spirit for 15-20 minutes a day and ask the Lord to give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him (Eph. 1:17-19). Ask Him to transform you by the renewing of your mind that the life of Christ may be made manifest in you.

Lord, I ask that you would open up to us the mysteries of the knowledge of who you are. Draw each one of us into a deeper relationship with You. We want to know You, Lord. Thank You for giving us the opportunity! We love You, Jesus. Amen.

Blessings to you all!
