That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, father of Glory may give to you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe…
Ephesians 1:17-19 (emphasis added)
In the House of Prayer, we pray this prayer hundreds of times a day. Sometimes it might lose its sting after praying it so many times, but the last week or so, the Lord has been opening it up to me even more.
The Lord desires to reveal Himself to us and He has made a way through the Holy Spirit. We see Him with the eyes of our heart. I pray constantly that I would behold the Lord and that my eyes would be opened to the things of the spirit like when Elisha prayed for Gehazi to see the chariots and horsemen of Israel (II Kings 6:17).
This is a good prayer and our cry for wisdom and revelation does encompass that type of revelation. However, it also encompasses the realm of seeing with the eyes of our heart like Abraham where he saw the invisible city whose builder and maker is God (Heb. 11:10). He set his eyes on heavenly things rather than earthly things. It takes that kind of vision to pray a prayer like “Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matt. 6:9-10).
Also, this kind of vision is required to realize that we are seated with Christ in heavenly places (Eph. 2:6) and that we can boldly come before His throne as sons and heirs (Heb. 4:16).
That throne is a real place and although our physical eyes can’t always see it, the eyes of our hearts see it and believe. Jesus told Thomas, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Great is our reward in heaven because we believe.
Praying for wisdom and revelation and that the eyes of our understanding would be enlightened is about asking to Lord to show us something about Himself that we have never seen before, so that when we come before Him in prayer, the eyes of our hearts see that throne in heaven and see the Lord. Then, we take our place as those who see what the Father is doing and do it with Him like Jesus did (John 5:19).
So, this week, quiet yourself before the Lord for 20 minutes a day and pray this prayer over yourself. Ask the Lord to give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation. Ask Him to open the eyes of your understanding. Focus on these two parts of the prayer for a few days, then go onto the rest if you desire. As you pray, think about being able to see the things of heaven. Think of the examples of Abraham, Jesus, and those with understanding like Daniel and the sons of Issachar.
This is a prayer that you will want to pray for the rest of your life because there is always more of “the knowledge of Him” to be revealed.
Lord, open the eyes of our hearts to see who you are. We can’t comprehend your majesty with our feeble eyes. Give us revelation of who You are. Amen.
Blessings,
Amanda
